Not just for cooking

This one is not entirely about cooking and eating, but it's a good time of year to discuss coconut oil and your skin. You might have it in your cupboard already - if you do, good on you - if not, buy some and quickly. Your skin will thank you and love you. Better than lotion, less expensive than lotion and it's natural. You can also use it on your hair!

Here's a short article from the Dr. Oz show about coconut oil for cooking, for your skin and for your hair. So cook with it and lather it on! I don't cook with it often, but I'm going to work it into the mix.

Action item: If you have some in the cupboard, try it on your dry hands that are suffering in this cold weather!

  1. I actually have a brand new jar of Virgin coconut oil in my cupboard. I haven't opened it yet because I do not really know how to use it. It was given to us by my father in law. I will have to read the uses now!

    1. Have fun! Read more about it or ask Todd's nutritionist (does he see one?) before doing much cooking with it. I think the research is still divided with regards to coconut oil and cholesterol. But use it for all the other great reasons -- feels great on dry skin!

  2. Hey Betsy! Jill and I are in Sunday school class together and she passed your blog on to me :) I am enjoying reading all your little articles and information so much! And looking forward to trying some of the recipes on here. I am big on eating whole, unprocessed foods with all of the good stuff in them. My oldest daughter (she is married with 3 little girls of her own) has turned me on to almond milk, kale, steel cut oats and some of the foods that are being talked about more and more now every day because of their fabulous antioxidant and vitamin properties. She uses a lot of coconut oil. I started using it several years ago as deodorant. It is fabulous because of its antibacterial properties. It's great for diaper rash on babies too! I use it to make pop corn. I use olive oil for most of my cooking though. I also use olive oil on my skin. Thanks for writing this blog. I can't wait to read more of it!

    1. Hi, and thanks for checking out the blog and taking time to write! So happy to be corresponding with people who I may not have met otherwise. See I had no idea of the other coconut oil uses. I've not tried olive oil on my skin, but I have used avocado oil. I love learning more about natural products. Keep me posted on other things you've tried or want to share!
